Qld: Emergency crews search for missing campers in north

Qld: Emergency crews search for missing campers in north

An air search for six missing campers in far north Queensland will continue today after
they failed to return from an Easter camping trip.

Police say the four adults and two teenagers were due back in Atherton on Anzac Day,
but still haven't arrived home.

Officers say they're concerned for the safety of the group because of deteriorating weather.

Meanwhile, seven campers have been found stranded on Russell Island, about 7km off
the coast near Babinda and are due to be rescued today.

And 12 Sydney University students stranded in outback Queensland will also be airlifted
to safety today.

The group, who were studying flora and fauna in the region, were isolated by flood
waters at their camp site about 145km north-east of Bedourie.

SA: Radio host says his endorcements are no secret

SA: Radio host says his endorcements are no secret

ADELAIDE, Feb 10 AAP - Adelaide radio personality Jeremy Cordeaux said today his
listeners were well aware of his personal endorsements and there was nothing wrong with
them.

"There's absolutely nothing wrong with personal endorsements," he told ABC radio.

"Prime Ministers have them, astronauts have them, sportsmen have them.

"They've got to be obvious, they've got to be proclaimed and they've got to be above board."

Mr Cordeux's comments followed his appearance yesterday before the Australian Broadcasting
Authority's (ABA) cash for comment enquiry in Adelaide.

The hearings were held behind closed doors but were believed to have centred on claims
Adelaide radio stations 5AD and 5DN accepted fees of up to $30,000 from companies for
so-called industry credibility packages while Mr Cordeaux was managing director.

But the high-profile talk-back announcer said today the idea was just one of several
to come out of a management think-tank and was never proceeded with.

After yesterday's questioning Mr Cordeaux said there was no connection between the
Adelaide investigation by the ABA and the adverse findings handed down against Sydney
personalities Alan Jones and John Laws.

"There seems to me to be absolutely no parallel between what happened allegedly in
Sydney and what is being alleged here in Adelaide," he told reporters.

Mr Cordeaux, who no longer manages the stations but hosts a morning talkback program
on 5DN, said he had done nothing wrong and was unconcerned about the investigation.

The ABA also defended yesterday's closed hearing and board member Ian Robertson said
Mr Cordeaux was not under any personal suspicion or criticism.

"The authority is simply trying to ascertain what has happened, what agreements radio
5AD and 5DN have entered into and what, if anything, should be done about it," he said.

NSW: Unidentified object threatens water supply

NSW: Unidentified object threatens water supply

SYDNEY, Dec 9 AAP - A township in northern New South Wales is facing severe water restrictions
after an unidentified object crashed into the local dam.

Some time between Monday and midday yesterday the projectile slammed into the Guyra
water supply dam on the outskirts of the town, north of Armidale.

Police said it was first noticed by a local council employee carrying out routine maintenance
work.

Fire brigade spokesman John Hobar said an area of reed beds measuring four metres by
10 metres had been flattened, fuelling suspicion that the object may have fallen from
the sky.

But he said he had checked with a number of space agencies, meterological experts
and authorities in Canberra and there had been no sightings of an unidentified object
falling from the sky.

Mr Hobar said the brigade's hazardous material unit went to the scene and tested the
water for toxins and radioactive material, but the results were clear.

"There's a township of about 5000 people and they're on severe water restrictions now,"

Mr Hobar told AAP.

"We're not prepared to declare the water safe until we actually site the object. We're
not prepared to take any risks."

The local council has isolated water supply to the town by switching off pumps and
treatment works.

Mr Hobar said crews were unable to identify the object last night because it had become
embedded in the dam and the water was muddy.

Divers will be brought in this morning to try to make a positive identification.

NSW: Thousands turn out for Anzac Day march

NSW: Thousands turn out for Anzac Day march

SYDNEY, April 25 AAP - Thousands of people lined Sydney's main streets this morning to
watch the nation's ex-servicemen and women in the traditional Anzac Day march.

Fine weather brought out an estimated 150,000 onlookers to cheer on 15,000 war veterans, as
they made their way toward the Anzac Memorial in Hyde Park for a ceremony at 12:30pm.

Against the backdrop of war in Yugoslavia, Serb veterans declined to march in this year's
Sydney parade.

About one hour after the march began in Martin Place, an 80-year-old war veteran suffered a
heart attack and was resuscitated by St John Ambulance officers.

He was taken to St Vincent's Hospital in a critical but stable condition.

A senior Gold Coast officer accused of an inappropriate relationship with the widow
of a slain detective will learn his fate within a month.

Queensland Police Commissioner BOB ATKINSON says the officer involved took leave on
his own accord, but could be forced to take additional leave if necessary.

into the matter.

The commissioner expects the investigation will be completed within a month.
