SCHENECTADY -- Sometimes, it's been just Amae and the bird.

Amae Martin-Alsdorf moved her salon, Visible Expression by Amae, to State Street two years ago knowing she would have a rough year ahead of her. Road construction and sidewalk replacement on Schenectady's streetscape project would disrupt her business for at least that long, she reasoned.

But it got even rougher. Construction, which began about a month after she opened in her new location, stretched into nearly two years, ripping up sidewalks and taking down streetlights -- and driving customers away.
