OMAHA, Neb., Jan. 20 -- The University of Nebraska-Omaha issued the following news release:
Family photos, home videos and even the voices of relatives have been brought to life by a Web-based service created by two graduates from the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO).
Launched last fall by the husband-wife team of Gary and Korie Cochran of Omaha, LegacySharing.com allows users to easily upload photographs, videos, audio files and other scanned memorabilia. The completed and customized online "legacybook" can then be shared with anyone with access to the Internet, free of charge. The "books" are shared via secure guest accounts, so users control who views the books online. The finished books can also be downloaded and viewed offline, on a personal computer.
"LegacyBooks can bring to life the story of a loved one by documenting milestone activities such as the first few months of life, birthdays, graduations, family reunions, wedding anniversaries, school activities, vacations," Gary said. "The possibilities are endless."
The project's idea surfaced after Gary's grandmother passed away in 2006. He realized that scrapbooks and shoeboxes of photographs could never tell his grandmother's story.
"For my children to really understand who she was, I needed to go beyond the scrapbooks and tell the stories behind the pictures," Gary said. "I needed to find a way to share the little things about their great-grandmother that made her so special."
In addition to posting multimedia on the Web site, users can also write about their family histories in an online journal.
While using LegacySharing.com costs users $10.99 every three months, the Cochrans are offering their Web site services free of charge to local churches and nonprofit organizations.
As the Cochrans were developing the LegacySharing.com idea, they met with UNO's Nebraska Business Development Center (NBDC), housed in the College of Business Administration. The pair worked for months with the NBDC to not only design the Web site, but also ensure its functionality and ease of use.
"The NBDC bent over backwards to help us," Gary said. "They took care of any problems that came about, and the anticipated potential problems. It was wonderful to find local people who could make our project work on a national level."
"NBDC Web Solutions carefully listened to LegacySharing.com's business goals, gathered their technical requirements and discussed design elements so that our team was sure to meet their needs in this fully functioning e-business solution," said NBDC's Jennifer Metzler. "The Cochrans created the concept and NBDC brought it to reality."
The NBDC offers a number of business services, including small business development, business exit planning, technical assistance, as well as management and technology solutions. Its home offices are in Omaha, with additional locations in Chadron, Scottsbluff, North Platte, Kearney, Norfolk, Wayne and Lincoln.
