Polish miners hold Christmas protest over merger, wages

Hundreds of Polish miners decided to remain underground for Christmas to continue their protest against a government decision over the future of their operation and wages, officials said Monday.

Television footage showed many of them wearing helmets and setting up a long wooden table where they planned to celebrate a traditional Polish Christmas Eve dinner.

The feast typically includes 12 dishes to celebrate each of Jesus' disciples. Dishes include carp, herring, red beet soup and pierogi filled with potatoes and cheese.
