TAS: Coroner criticises ABC team for taking evidence

HOBART, Aug 26 AAP - A coroner today criticised an ABC Four Corners team for takingevidence from a remote Bass Strait island where a fisherman's body was found.

Coroner Don Jones, in his findings on the deaths of three fishermen after the MargaretJ sank last year, said the team's action was "totally inappropriate".

The crew had found a wallet with personal papers belonging to Kimm (Kimm) Giles, whosebody was found on Prime Seal Island in the Furneaux group.

Mr Jones said the media representatives knew of the significance of the find and saidthe item should not have been taken from the scene.

"No contact was made with police at all, which in my view is a clear indication thatthe item was taken knowing full well it should not be removed and (that they) did notwant to run the risk of losing what the crew saw as a newsworthy item," Mr Jones said.
